Midge Johnson
“For me, painting is about the process. It is a tool to explore and express the connection of my inner world to the outer world. My process begins with setting an intention to express both conscious and unconscious emotions. Playing with color and texture, using collage pieces, scraping, sanding, using tools other than brushes all help to communicate universal and personal feelings through creation of artwork. Often my inspiration comes from vivid dreams, the state of the world and my personal state of being. I always seek joy, and I allow the painting to tell me where and how to make the next mark. I hope that the viewer will make their own personal connection with my work and will enjoy exploring the colors, textures, value and shapes that I have selected.”
Midge Johnson is an abstract expressionist painter infusing her work with emotion by creating bursts of color, variety of line, splashes of ink and marks made with everything but the kitchen sink. Midge often presents her work on atypical substrates along with special finishes, as illustrated by her latest series, Slenders, comprising many paintings which are all six inches wide and varying in length up to six feet tall. The Slenders series expresses the necessity of standing strong and tall in the face of life’s adversities, while, as a practical matter, offering the collector versatility of display in groups or standing alone.
